The second day of our road trip, after a few pies and sausage rolls, we all felt like having something different. Browse around Ballarat and happily found a little Thai place hidden on the Sturt street in the CBD of Ballarat called Jasmine Thai.
We have been quite lucky with the weather these few days in chilling Ballarat, apart from a few drops of rain and crazy wind during the night, it was all sunny during the day. However, in such a cold night, something with a kick can spice up our stomach a bit.
Ran into the Jasmine Thai restaurant from the drizzling rain; the warmth and the yummy smell of chilli suddenly warmed us up. The place looks like a family business, the owner was a mama, the son was the cashier, while daddy was doing all the cooking.
The time we got there was 5 and it had just opened. Even though online it said it opens at 5:30, so a tip for Googlers if you’re looking for this place, do bear in mind it opens at 5 pm, and they’re pretty prompt picking up the phone, so highly recommend for the takeaways if you want something quick.
Well, before you pick up the phone, one more comment on flavour, all I can say is…go ahead, pick up the phone.
Sorry just joking a little. The menu looks like a family banquet, all kinds of local Thai street snacks and family dishes.
From that menu we can tell the family who owns Jasmine Thai treats customers like house guests.

We ordered a Spicy fish cakes and Gai Bai Tuey(marinated chicken rolled in pardon leaf) as entrees, Pad Thai and Pad Kemow with chicken as noodles dish to share. Also, for our main, we ordered Pad Kaprao with chicken and Yum with squid.
To be frank, without the main it was quite enough already… But we loved to add some more spicy food to our dinner! so we also got Pad Kaparao and Yum, so as you can imagine, it was a bit too much for 4 adults, however, it was all worth it!
Especially the spicy fish cake and the two noodle dishes we ordered were the best we’ve ever had (if anyone had an even better one please let us know and would love to hear more about it). Yum, which was the Thai hot and spicy warm meat salad with chilli, onion and Thai herbs, was average, and a bit too sour, think it’s just a little too much lemon juice in there. Apart from that, it was a very satisfying meal.
All in all, it was a well-designed menu and we love the warmth of the service, and the dish with a strong family flavour. If you even wonder around in Ballarat city centre, highly recommend putting Jasmine Thai on Sturt street on your tasting list.
