Cold, cloudy and super windy, that’s how a day in Melbourne winter is like. Everyone else might feel like something warm and soupy, but I all of sudden am in the sushi mood.
On the way back from getting my chai I saw a little hidden sign saying “Tokyo Kitchen Sakae, spicy tuna roll”, I knew straight away I got my lunch settled.
Pushed the door and a little cosy space appears filled with typical joint style tables and chairs, and it’s packed!
“Hello, lunch?” A girl with a big smile approached me after she efficiently served other customers, “yes, lunch to go.”
“Of course, here’s the takeaway menu.” After a quick browse, I was happy that I found myself another popular little sushi joint.
Honestly, before I checked out the menu, I didn’t think my lunch would land here at Tokyo Kitchen Sakae since it’s a sushi place located in quite a pricy postcode Brighton.
The menu wasn’t the cheapest but cheap enough to be outstanding in this neighbourhood. Not just the reasonable pricing attracted me, but also how it is set up inside makes me want to bring my hubby here for a romantic night out for a quick bite. 6 pieces of spicy tuna roll priced at $9.50, and I can imagine myself having a feast since I saw similar dishes like this one on other tables.
The wait was a bit longer than the usual lunch joint; it took around 15 minutes for my food to be packed and presented ready in front of me. I got a little impatient while waiting since I only had a 30 minutes lunch break, so I was hoping something quick.
Once I saw the package, I have to say this might be the most delicate take-away food I have ever had. It was packed in a really beautiful takeaway container with a clear lid. Inside, 6 pieces of tuna roll were individually topped with loads of tuna and garnished with fish eggs. It looked more like 6 roses in there rather than sushi. This is a feast!
“I’m going to sit down and enjoy this!” So I picked a little table outside the restaurant where there’s a shed so I don’t worry about the cold wind. This means I can even bring my puppy here to have a day out in the sun when the good weather comes back to freezing Melbourne.
Tokyo Kitchen Sakae | The Flavour
I opened the lid and there’s a little pack of wasabi and pickled ginger. The first bite, I just couldn’t help putting the whole one in my mouth, the popping of fish eggs and lovely kicks of the chilli in the tuna chunks: the flavour was just so colourful and mild at the same time. And.. they’re all freshly made on the spot, so, its worth of waiting.
Quick lunch? Not so much, eventually I had to rush back to work but I had no issue finishing the whole lot. Good lunch, oh YEAH! Hubby, we’re going back to Tokyo Kitchen Sakae for sure!
