On a rainy day (like today) during these interesting self-isolation times, there is nothing more comforting than preparing some perfect Dutch Vanilla Custard (vla) for the Dutch.
Growing up with vla (Dutch custard), this was one of my favourite desserts as a kid. Back in the Netherlands there many different flavours of Custard (vla), like chocolate, strawberry and vanilla. For me personally Vanilla has always been my favourite.
Besides the variety in flavours the Dutch like to add their own toppings to it. Like the dutch chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag), strawberries, bananas, ice-cream and all sorts of cookies.
Therefore, it’s my pleasure to share this extreme easy vanilla custard (vanille vla) recipe with you today.
Combine the milk, cornflour and eggs in a saucepan.
Put the saucepan on the stove on medium/high heat
Continue stirring the custard (vla) until it becomes thick and creamy (this can take up to approx. 10-15 minutes)
Remove the custard from the heat and add in the vanilla bean paste and caster sugar
Custard (vla) is now ready to be served hot. Otherwise, if you prefer it being cold you can cool it down by pouring it in a heat-proof bowl covered with some cling wrap to prevent a "milk skin" being formed on top of the vanilla custard (dutch vanille vla).
Now.... and your personal toppings (or eat it as is) and just enjoy!

Love the name, “Down to earth” but this small little cafe in Brighton is not so down to the quality of their customer service.
