Dutch custard, commonly known as vla, is a popular Dutch dessert enjoyed by many. Making this delicious treat at home is surprisingly easy and requires only a few ingredients. With its smooth, creamy texture and sweet vanilla flavour, it’s the perfect indulgent treat to enjoy with family and friends.

History of Dutch Custard

The Dutch Custard, or ‘Vla’, has a long and rich history. This creamy, thick custard-like dessert is thought to have been created in the Netherlands as far back as the 17th century. It was traditionally served during special occasions such as weddings and baptisms and was made from two key ingredients: milk and eggs.

There are various stories regarding the origin of Dutch Custard, with one being that it was first created by a chef in Amsterdam who served it at an aristocrat’s banquet. Another story states that it was invented by a woman named Anna Voorbij who lived in Rotterdam in 1810; she began selling it at fairs throughout the country. Over time, other ingredients were added to create different varieties of Vla depending on the region.

Variations of Dutch Custard

Dutch custard, known as vla, is a popular and versatile dessert. It can be enjoyed in its classic form or with a variety of variations. Dutch custard is a creamy pudding-like treat that can be eaten by itself or used to top other desserts like cakes and pies.

The original version of Dutch custard is made with egg yolks, sugar, and milk. This base recipe can be flavored with vanilla extract or other ingredients like cocoa powder for chocolate vla. There are also some international variations such as coconut vla from Sri Lanka or cardamom vla from India.

Besides the variety in flavours the Dutch like to add their own toppings to it. Like the dutch chocolate sprinkles (hagelslag), strawberries, bananas, ice-cream and all sorts of cookies.

Therefore, it’s my pleasure to share this extremely easy vanilla custard (vanille vla) recipe with you today.
